Aesthetic Refinements
Nipple Reconstruction
Nipple reconstruction is a minor surgical procedure that recreates a raised nipple shape on the reconstructed breast using local skin flaps or grafts, often followed by tattooing to add natural color.
For many women, breast reconstruction feels most complete when the nipple and areola are restored. Nipple reconstruction is a minor surgical procedure that recreates the raised shape of a nipple on the reconstructed breast. It can be done on one or both sides and is often followed by tattooing to add natural color to the areola.
While not medically necessary, many women choose this step as a meaningful way to feel “finished” after mastectomy and reconstruction. Others decide they are happy without it. Both choices are valid.
How It Works
Local skin flaps: The surgeon uses small folds of skin from the reconstructed breast itself to create a raised nipple.
Skin grafts (sometimes): If needed, a small piece of skin from another area (like the inner thigh) may be used to help build the nipple.
Areola restoration: The darker circle around the nipple (the areola) is usually added later using tattooing for color and shading.
Timing: Nipple reconstruction is typically done a few months after the main reconstruction, once healing is complete.
The procedure is usually outpatient, meaning you go home the same day.
Who May Choose Nipple Reconstruction
You may consider nipple reconstruction if you:
Want your reconstructed breast to look more natural in and out of clothing.
Would like symmetry when only one breast has been removed.
Feel that restoring the nipple will help you emotionally complete your reconstruction journey.
Benefits of Nipple Reconstruction
Restores breast appearance: Adds shape and detail that help the breast look more like your natural one.
Pairs with tattooing: Tattooing can add realistic color, completing the look.
Quick recovery: Most women return to normal activity within a few days.
Outpatient procedure: No hospital stay required.
Things to Keep in Mind
Loss of sensation: Even though a nipple is created, most women do not regain feeling in the area.
Flattening over time: Reconstructed nipples may lose some projection or “flatten” as healing continues.
Not required: Some women feel perfectly comfortable without a nipple and choose not to undergo this step.
Insurance coverage: In the U.S., most insurance plans that cover mastectomy also cover nipple reconstruction.
Emotional Considerations
For many women, seeing a nipple again in the mirror brings a sense of closure and wholeness. Others may not feel the need for this step, finding peace with their reconstructed breast as it is. Both paths are normal and valid. What matters most is what helps you feel comfortable and complete.
